Amethyst is a silicate mineral, formed from silica rich solutions with traces of iron . These solutions often enter cavities and form beautiful crystals .In the right conditions the iron in the crystals is irradiated , so producing the rich purple colour of the stone. The crystals are often found in strange shaped rock nodules called geodes. 

Amethyst was hightly prized in Medieval times as the stone of royalty.

Amethyst is said to protect , relieve negativity and even protect against drunkenness!
