The birthstone for March and Pisces, born between 19th February and 20th March, is Aquamarine– found in Brazil, Madagascar, Zambia, amongst other countries and rating around 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Its name comes from Latin words meaning water and sea with the Greeks and Romans referring to it as the sailor’s gem, ensuring safe crossing over seas and preventing seasickness. In Medieval times, Aquamarine was believed to make soldiers invincible and to reawaken the love of married couples. Roman legends stated the stone absorbs the atmosphere of young love and was considered as a gift for a bride from her groom on the morning following consummation of their marriage. Aquamarine is also suggested as a gift on the 16th and 19th wedding anniversaries and is believed to bring calmness and be effective for health problems relating to the throat, anxiety and stress.
